Certificate 1 – Week 9

Actually Posted on 12th May 2008

Hi everyone. This week we took a short tour of the campus, Bruce saved me from a deadly spider, and everyone vented their various thoughts about the quiz that everyone did last term.

In this session we learned how to use to the DET Portal Outlook Email to send and receive emails. As you would have noticed, the Outlook Email account gives you many other personal information management (PIM) tools, such as Notes, Calendaring, Tasks, and Scheduling to name a few. While you are a TAFE student, you are free to use the Email account as you require. If you need to contact teachers or other students within TAFE, using this email system is your best shot.

When using email, remember the following:

To: This field must contain the email address (or addresses) of the recipients. Everyone will know who the message was sent to.

CC: This is the Carbon Copy field. If you want to send the message to other people, put their email addresses in here. Everyone will know who the message was sent to. NOTE: Better to use the CC field for multiple email address, rather then the To: field to avoid problems with SPAM filters.

BCC: This is the Blind Carbon Copy field. Recipients in this field (email addresses) will receive the message, but will not know who else the message was sent to.

Subject: A brief note explaining the contents of the email, or not. You can leave it blank if you wish.

Following on from our Email exercise, was the use of a forum. I introduced you all to the forum on this website, rather then take you all out into the public internet, where people might laugh at you (just kidding about the laughing). The forum on this website is specifically set up for your use alone. We covered some of it’s functionality and it’s use on the internet, as well as forum use in general. Providing additional instructions on how to use a forum, is a rather difficult task. Instead, when you visit a forum look for the following to help you on your way:

  • FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) – Check These if You are Unsure. They usually appear as a link at the top of the page.
  • Stickies – Check these for the forum rules. Stickies usually appear as the first thread in a forum, and are often promoted to get your attention with additional colour, fonts and sometimes even sound.
  • Rules – Always read the forum rules. Most forums stipulate no swearing, and the prohibition of duplicate threads (Posts). This means you should search for your answer first (also usually at the top of the page), before asking your question. Quite often you will find someone else who has already asked your question. You will be surprised at just how “un-obscure” your question might actually be!
  • B-GC – Be as Grammatically Correct as Possible. The easier it is to read and understand your question, the faster you will receive an answer. Avoid typing in ALL CAPS, even if you are frustrated. It just looks like you are shouting, and most forums will automatically delete posts like this to silence your shouting.
  • Participate in the Community – Most, if not all forums contain a place to “just chat”. This is usually a thread marked “General Talk” or “The Lobby” or “The Lounge” or something similar. Visit these threads and introduce yourself. This will also increase your chances of receiving an answer.

Feel free to use the Forum on Mokona Modoki to post your thoughts or opinions. You can start new threads if you like, or even use it to discuss topics covered in class.

In the case of both email and forums (and the use of the internet in general), it is a good idea to adopt a good sense of internet etiquette (netiquette). Below are some links that will give you some helpful insight into netiquette.

Remember; I put these links and resources here for your use. So if they are of no use to you, too hard to understand or you feel they are off topic, then please let me know, via any of the communication channels you have with me. I am more then happy to make changes, source better content or even create fresh content from scratch, just for you! You need only ask … nicely!
